Palagonite
Description
Palagonite is a dynamite amendment that packs a serious wallop. It is derived from an ancient Volcanic deposit that, unique from regular Basalt dust, was rapidly cooled by being oozed out into a nearby lakebed, that subsequently dried up. This means that it is "softer" and more readily decomposed into the soil structure than that of Basalt Rock dust such as that from the North Coast of NSW. It has a unique composition, having many tiny vesicles that run in and through it, which have a tendency to become colonised by microbes.
One of the main benefits of using Palagonite is its ability to detoxify, balance and improve soil structure and cation exchange. We consider it the most "royal" of all the rock minerals we can source in Australia, containing every single essential trace mineral (all 22 of em!) that are vital for healthy plant growth, in just about the perfect ratios. Most soils have a CEC of about 10 to 25, Palagonite has a CEC of 34! making it a simple way to dramatically increase your soils ability to hold and buffer nutrients. It also holds significant levels of moisture, contributing to less water usage over the crop cycle.
This grade consists of a mix of grain sizes, from 5mm granule size, down to very fine powder. For sustained release over time.
Palagonite makes a terrific complement to the slower releasing Iron and trace minerals in our High Paramagnetic Basalt. And while the Paramagnetic value of Palagonite is not quite as high as it, it is notably high when compared to other basalts from inferior deposits such as crystalline or granite.
The approx analysis of Palagonite is Silicon 22.30%, Aluminium 7.70%, Iron 10.10%, Manganese 0.23%, Magnesium 3.30%, Calcium 5.10%, Sodium 2.36%, Phosphorus 0.24%, Potassium 0.77%, Total Carbon 0.03%, Total Nitrogen 0.03%, Cobalt 60.0 ppm, Copper 40.0 ppm, Nickel 90.0 ppm, Zinc 170 ppm, Molybdenum 1.0-3.0 ppm, Selenium 0.3-0.8 ppm, Chloride 62 ppm est, Sulphur 4.4 ppm, Boron 0.06 ppm, Paramagnetism 600-1300c/g/s,Water holding Capacity >65% pH 8-8.5
Application rates can range from 1/2 to 2 Tablespoons (7 grams to 42 grams) per 5L of soil.
Note: While studies have demonstrated that it's quite hard to "overdo" Palagonite, Soils that have previously used it in recent crop cycles will do better using the lower application rates. Fresh soils have shown great benefit when used at the higher rates to get things kick started, and to absorb extraneous Nitrogen.
